The Public Option

The Health Care Debate continues and now it is Democrat against Democrat in whether a Public or Government financed option needs to be part of the package. Rockefeller of West Virginia wants the government option to follow the payment plan set up for Medicare recipients. Schumer of New York wants to discuss options then come up with a formula.

Of course the big questions is - Who is going to pay for this? Where will the funding come from to initiate this government run Health Care Organization?

Those of us already satisfied with our health plans will not be in favor of our tax dollars, especially increased tax dollars, going to finance this option.

The majority of people who will opt for this option are low income, or unemployed, so they will not be able to pay premiums. (At least Medicare recipients have their Medicare premium deducted from their monthly Social Security check.)

Without increasing taxes I do not believe the government plan will have the funding it needs. All the savings by tightening down on Medicare and Medicaid fraud will not be seen for years, if they ever actually appear.

I agree that all people need health coverage. But let's be honest and say the truth. For health care reform to work all the American public is going to have to pay. There is no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow that will finance this reform. The only pot of gold is the one from our pay checks, those of us who are lucky enough to be working these days.

The liberals can ask for everything under the sun. What they need to do is explain simply and clearly how they plan on paying for the reform.

G8 to G20

This week there was a meeting first in New York with the leaders of the world at the United Nations, and then later in the week there was a meeting of the G20 in Pittsburgh.

Remember when it was the G8? Things are changing, especially in the world economy, and if the USA is not careful, although we will always be a consumer nation, what kind of producer we are will be up for grabs.

After all, the name of the game is look for cheap labor, which means out sourcing. That practice has helped India and China to rise on the world economic field and others are following suit.

As world competition grows, it is time for companies in the USA, as well as the labor unions, to begin rethinking their partnerships and come up with ways for American products built in America be on the top of the field.

When you go into a store, just how many items do you find that say "Made in the USA"?
Let's face it, China has us beat hands down, and products from other countries are rising. Our stores may sell the products, but they are not products made here by our labor force.

America needs to get producing, or we are headed on a down hill ride that will eventually lead to third world status.

Democratic Power

I see that Vice-President Biden swore in Paul Kirk as temporary Senator of Massachusetts, giving the Democrats their 60 seats in the Senate.

Frankly, I am not happy that the Obama Administration used the Kennedy influence to insure he has enough votes to ram Health Care Reform through the Congress if the Republicans do not get any of the compromises they are seeking.

The state of Massachusetts decided years ago on a policy to replace a US Senator and I feel that policy should be respected. If the citizens of Massachusetts want to change the policy, then there should be a state referendum and a decision made by the people, not some lawmakers looking for payback at a later date.

Between asking the governor of New York not to run, and pushing for the governor of Massachusetts to give them a friendly man for the Senate, I think the Obama Administration are stepping out of bounds.

Blatant interference is not the way to inspire the confidence of the people.

These actions are a disappointment. Obama, and especially his team need to be a little more considerate of the feelings of the American public or they just might discover they are in for a short time in Washington.

Congressman Ruppersberger and the New GI Bill

I received an email from my Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, thanking me for my interest in veterans affairs and providing information on the latest GI Bill.

I must confess that I have never expressed interest in veterans' affairs, an oversight on my part, so I thought I would share the information with my readers.

September 22, 2009

Mr. Michael Wolfe
123 Carolstowne Road
Reisterstown, Maryland 21136

Dear Mr. Wolfe:

Knowing of your interest in veterans' affairs, I am proactively reaching out to my constituents to update you on landmark legislation that gives veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars the opportunity to a first-class education and future. I believe we should always take care of the brave men and women of the armed forces who have sacrificed themselves in defense of our country and our liberties. Our country is indebted to our veterans as well as their families. An affordable college education is one way to demonstrate our respect and gratitude for their service.

I was proud to support the post-9/11 GI bill, which Congress passed in June 2008 and took effect last month. This bill is the most extensive educational assistance program authorized since the original GI Bill was signed into law in 1944. It enables veterans, active service members, reservists and National Guard members a chance to receive a free, in-state, undergraduate college education at a public institution, including housing, books and supplies. Unused benefits can be transferred to veterans' spouses and children.

I think it is important that we balance the varied needs of our country's "new" veterans with the growing and changing needs of veterans from previous conflicts. An estimated 500,000 veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan are expected to take advantage of the bill this year alone. The bill provides financial support to veterans with at least 90 days of aggregate service on or after September 11, 2001, or individuals discharged with a service-connected disability after 30 days. Veterans must be honorably discharged to be eligible for the program.

The application process is complicated. I understand many who want to take advantage of this exciting opportunity will have questions about their benefits. For more information, please contact my office, or visit www.newgibill.org, a comprehensive resource that includes frequently asked questions, real-time bill updates, benefit calculators and eligibility requirements. You can also call 1-888-442-4551.

I think it is very important to communicate frequently with my constituents. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact my office or access my website at www.dutch.house.gov.

C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger

David Axelrod for President Obama

As I promised yesterday, here is David Axelrod's message from president Obama. Let me know if it answers your questions.

Dear Friend,

Four minutes — that’s all you need to learn just what you get from health insurance reform. Take the few minutes and watch now:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/issues/health_care/?e=14&ref=image

The details the President outlines in this video are those that every American needs to know. No matter your political party or whether or not you have insurance, his plan for health care security and stability matters to all of us.

Millions of American citizens cannot get health insurance — and 14,000 are losing their insurance every day. If we do nothing, half of Americans under the age of 65 will lose their health insurance at some point in the next ten years.

That’s not right. Plain and simple. For Americans with insurance as well as those without it, inaction is not an option. In America, no one should go broke because they get sick.

Bottom line — health insurance reform will provide more security and stability to those who have health insurance, coverage for those who don’t, and will lower the cost of health care for our families, our businesses, and our government.

As the President says, now is the time to deliver the change we need on health care. Forward this email and make sure your family, friends and social networks take four minutes and watch this video.

Thank you,
David

Senator Mikulski on Medical Malpractice

Today I received two missives on Health Care Reform.

One was from David Axelrod, senior advisor to President Obama. Since I write so often to the White House, I am on their mailing list. Basically he wants me to watch Obama's speech from Congress and explain all the positive parts of the President's goals for Health Care Reform. I still haven't figured out how this is not going to cost me in some manner, shape or form. Tomorrow I will share his missive.

The second missive was from Senator Barbara Mikulski regarding medical malpractice and how to bring it under control so doctors can practice offensive medicine as opposed to defensive medicine.

Here is her letter. Let me know what you think.

Dear Mr. Wolfe:
Thank you for getting in touch with me about medical liability and health care reform. It's great to hear from you.

Health care is one of the most important issues facing families and our economy. We absolutely need to pass health reform that:

-reduces costs for providers, families, business and government

-protects people's choice of doctors, hospitals and health plans

-improves providers' ability to deliver quality care

-assures affordable, quality health care for all Americans

I share your concern about the rising cost of malpractice insurance. The high costs of malpractice insurance are a huge financial burden, affecting doctors' ability to care for their patients and even practice medicine.

I agree that we must address the issue of medical malpractice. This must be done in a way that protects doctors from frivolous lawsuits - and protects patients who suffer because of negligence or preventable injury.

Thanks once again for writing. Please let me know if I can be of assistance in the future.

Sincerely,
Barbara A. Mikulski
United States Senator

Obama faces change

President Obama seems to be doing some shuffling and changing of opinion on two big topics. Health Care Reform is one. He hit five talk shows this morning, trying to explain his plan. He still appears to feel that he knows what is best and even appears to think he is in the category with FDR with the Social Security Bill and LBJ with the introduction of Medicare.

I think Obama should be careful in his comparisons. His health care reform plans still have too many questions and gaps that need filling. How is there not going to be any tax increase on the middle class to pay for the coverage? Whether it is a federal tax increase or a health insurance premium increase, the middle class is going to pick up the bill one way or another.

He seems to be trying to play both ends of the Democratic party, telling some he really wants the public option and others that it is not that important. Rather than tell the plain simple truth, he playing politics, so much for an open, honest administration.

One thing the President definitely should not do is try and force his plan through Congress with no Republican support. I think that action could lead to a public outcry and repercussions that have not be seen in this country for decades. The President needs to learn meaningful compromise if he is going to lead.

The other area is the war in Afghanistan. After initially being gun ho to send in twenty-five thousand fresh troops, now he wants to reconsider sending any more. In truth, it looks like he is now going to consider an entirely new plan for fighting in Afghanistan and deciding what the priorities should be.

Already members of the Democratic are asking for a time table for troop withdrawal, stating that there is little hope for a democratic state in Afghanistan and that it will always be a place of tribal warfare.

Like George W Bush, President Obama promised to put an end to Al-Quaeda and bring in bin Laden. The prospects of him having any success are few.

President Obama came in to the White House with big plans. Reality is finally setting and he's finding that he is no longer the golden boy he thought he was. People are questioning his actions and motives. People are demanding straight answers and challenging vague responses.

America wants answers that aren't going to cost them a fortune. The President needs to start paying attention to what the people are saying, rather than those around him.

President Obama's Response on Health Care Reform

I received an email from the President today in response to the emails I have sent regarding Health Care Reform.

Not as specific as I want, but at least a response. That's a first.

Here's the letter. Let me know if you think he provides any real answers or solutions.

Dear Friend:

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me. I have heard
from countless Americans struggling to afford health insurance and
health professionals striving to provide care. I appreciate your
perspective.

There is broad consensus among the American people on
the need for affordable, high-quality health care. The rising cost of
health care is the most pressing financial challenge for families and
for our Nation, and controlling this cost is essential to bringing
down the Federal deficits we inherited. We must end unfair
insurance practices that leave millions of Americans without
coverage, denying them access to care, and exposing them to
extraordinary burdens. And we should ensure that all small
business employees have access to affordable, high-quality health
plans so that we can make our economy--and our small businesses-
-more competitive. Now is the time to move forward, and I am
working to get health insurance reform done this year.

Since I took office, we have done more to improve health
care than we have in the previous decade. In February, I signed
H.R. 2 to provide coverage for millions of children through the
Children's Health Insurance Program, and I signed the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act to make key investments in
computerized medical records and preventive services.

Still, more must be done to lower costs, expand coverage,
and improve the quality of health care. My 2010 Budget makes a
major down payment on health insurance reform by implementing
efficiencies in government health care spending while improving
the quality of care. To help fulfill the debt we owe to our service
men and women, it includes the largest proposed single-year
increase in veterans funding in 30 years. It expands health care
coverage to an additional 500,000 veterans by 2013, implements
technology that eases the transition from military care to veterans'
care, and enhances screening and treatment services for those
suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic
Brain Injury.

Looking forward, there are tough choices to be made, and I
will seek to bring employers and workers, health care providers
and patients, and Democrats and Republicans together to create a
system that delivers better care and puts the Nation on a
sustainable, long-term fiscal path. To learn more about my agenda
or to share a personal story, please join me online at:
www.healthreform.gov. For further information on health care and
assistance that may be available to you, you may call 1-800-
FEDINFO or visit: www.usa.gov.

I share the sense of urgency that millions of Americans have
voiced. I watched as my ailing mother struggled with stacks of
insurance forms in the last moments of her life. This is not who
we are as a Nation; together, we will fix it.

Sincerely,

Barack Obama

Senator Mikulski on Health Care Reform

As you know I wrote to my legislators regarding health care reform. The first to respond is Senator Barbara Mikulski.

Read what she has to say. Definitely sounds to me like she thinks she is doing GREAT job.
Let me know what you think.

Dear Mr. Wolfe:

Thank you for getting in touch with me about health care reform. I'm so glad to hear from you.

Health care is one of the most important issues facing families and our economy. We absolutely need to pass comprehensive health reform that:

-reduces costs for families, business and government
-protects people's choice of doctors, hospitals and health plans
-assures affordable, quality health care for all Americans

As a member of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, I helped write the Affordable Health Choices Act, which was passed by our committee on July 15, 2009. This bill takes a giant step forward in providing health care that is available, undeniable and affordable for all Americans.

Our legislation protects choice of providers and plans, so if you like the coverage that you have, you will be able to keep it. We also take steps to fix what is broken. Our bill establishes insurance reforms and creates a strong public health insurance option so people can choose the health care plan that's right for them.

This legislation focuses on transforming the health care delivery system by focusing on public health, prevention and wellness programs. As the chair of the Quality Working Group, I wrote the section of the bill that would:

-improve care coordination and better manage chronic conditions
-use innovative practices to reduce medical errors and unnecessary hospital readmissions

The HELP committee bill also fixes basic inequities in the current system:

-ends discrimination on the basis of age, gender, or a pre-existing condition including denial of coverage and increased premiums
-eliminates lifetime and annual caps on benefits so that insurance companies can no longer just stop paying if your medical expenses are high
-allows young people extra time on their parents' insurance policy as they make the transition from school into jobs that offer them health coverage

Families and business are facing staggering health care costs. Premiums have doubled over the last 10 years. Without reform, these costs will continue to rise. The HELP bill reduces costs by:

-reducing administrative costs
-reducing medical and medication errors
-preventing hospital readmissions
-better managing chronic diseases
-reducing fraud and abuse in the health care system
-eliminating waste through promoting effective, evidence based medicine

This is a historic moment. Forty years ago, the United States of America landed a man on the moon. I think that's a wonderful achievement. But if we can send people into space and be able to afford to do it, we can also help people get to a doctor and be able to afford to do it.

Thanks once again for writing. Please let me know if I can be of assistance in the future.
Sincerely,
Barbara A. Mikulski
United States Senator

President Obama - Afro-American or Euro-American?

First Congressman Wilson of South Carolina called President Obama a liar regarding medical assistance for illegal aliens. The truth is, the congressman is correct. What hospital emergency room is going to kick someone out of the ER if they are dying? No one is going to be asking for citizenship papers, although they will be looking and hoping for health insurance card. If the person is without, they will still get treated and we will foot the bill, just as we do now.

The remark was inappropriate and the congressman apologised.

Suddenly, the congressman being from South Carolina, we are hearing the remark may be racist. After all, President Obama is the first Afro-American president.

Is that true? What denotes an Afro-American? President Obama is also an Euro-American. So, we can say he is just another in a long line of Euro-American presidents. Or we can do the sensible thing. Drop the Afro and the Euro and say President Obama is an American president.

It is had too believe that after all of these centuries we are still so grounded in our past, that rather than wanting to move into the future we continue with the fears and hatreds of the past. Racism is alive only because there are those who are afraid of something different than themselves. Rather than embracing our differences and turning America into a true unified melting pot, all we want to do is harp on our differences.

Let's strive to create a national identity not based on race, religion or ethnic background but rather based on a common desire to create a land of peace, opportunity and justice for all.

Idealistic, yes, but isn't that the goal our fore fathers had for this land, and isn't that the goal we should continue to strive for?

Let's judge one another by our words, deeds and hearts, not by how we look and pray.

Health Care Reform - How About Some Communication

It appears that the Democrats are struggling to figure out how they can create health care reform within the limitation's President Obama has put on them. Those without insurance need access immediately. The cost can not add to the deficit. If the funding does not work, and all the savings do not appear that the President states are there if Medicare and Medicaid are managed properly, then cuts will need to be made.

Come on,the Democrats do not know how to cut spending. The Republicans aren't too good at it either.

As I stated earlier, Obama needs to draw up his own plan, with all of the specifics highlighted and easy to read. Then his team can take the proposal to Congress and the haggling can begin.

The President needs to wake up to the fact that for all of their talk, Congress, and I mean all sides, really do not want to tackle health care reform. There are too many issues to resolve, to many interested parties to appease and too little guarantee of success.

If President Obama truly wants health care reform during his term, then he has to take the ball and run with it. I believe that if he can present a clear cut plan, the Democrats will support it, for party loyalty if no other reason. If President Obama uses his charm and compromises with the Republicans, especially on tort reform, then I think enough of them will get in step for the measure to pass.

Thus far the President has been a lot of talk, but has delegated the hard work to Congress. He needs to take control, make his pitch and press hard for passage.

This is the first major challenge of his his administration. Now we will have the opportunity to see if he is truly a leader, or just another weak kneed politician looking for scapegoats to lay the blame on.

The near future should give us an answer.

Ten Low Paying Jobs

I saw this article in Yahoo and decided to share it because I found it disturbing and frightening.

http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/career-articles-10_surprising_minimum_wage_jobs-969

When you see the salaries being paid to EMTS, nursing assistants, pharmacy assistants and pre-school teachers you have to wonder if we are ever going to get our priorities right in this country. We pay millions to sports players and actors, and yet the people who are responsible for us and our family members every day of the week are getting nothing.

Time for some serious thinking.

Sports are entertaining but a caring, trained EMT is the difference between life and death.

Its Common Sense!

9/11 Nine Years later

For the past couple of days I have been watching some of the documentaries and news clips, etc, about the 09/11 attack on the USA. You see and remember the weak and the strong, the heroes, and those who ignored all the warning signs and believed until the last moment it could not happen here in American - even though it already had happened and at one of the same places.

So here we are, a new administration in command and what do we have to show for our war on terrorism?

To my knowledge we know less about the where abouts of Osama bin Laden today than we did on 9/11. At least then we knew he was in Afghanistan. Where he is, or if he is even alive today, is any one's guess.

The USA's initial action to go after the terrorists responsible for the attacks on our homeland lead to the destruction of the Taliban control of Afghanistan and initiated what was hoped to be a democratic reform.

However, rather than stay focused on the hunt for terrorist and rebuilding Afghanistan, our national policy got side tracked and suddenly the emphasis moved from bin Laden and Afghanistan to Saddam Hussein and Iraq.

Eight years and two wars later the report is not good. True Saddam Hussein is dead, so maybe that's some kind of victory. However, Iraq is in turmoil, and as allied forces continue their withdrawal, internal violence grows daily and the prospect of an all out civil war looms in the near future. It does not appear that Iraq is going to be a success story.

As I said in the beginning, bin Laden remains a mystery, as does the where abouts of the majority of the Al Quaeda leadership.

Afghanistan is in the midst of a civil war, whether official sources want to admit that or not. The Taliban, in strong numbers, is fighting to regain control. The recent election shows the divisions and corruption taking place within Kabul.

Although many actions taken during the election are being questioned, I still think the one positive thing is that the questions are being raised, a government has not yet been forced on the Afghan people and there is still a small hope that some true form of parliamentary government can come out of all of this.

Of course it still leaves the question of how long the USA and NATO can stay.

After all is said and done, I feel that our government's actions after 9/11, although initially justified, have failed on all levels. What is needed now is to step back, and start all over again.

Our military's principal focus needs to be bin Laden and Al Quaeda. With NATO we should provide instructors for the Afghan military, but they need to be responsible for themselves.

We need to apologise to the Iraq people for the damage we caused and for the chaos and deaths that will come when we pull out. Visions of Saigon with helicopters leaving the roof of the USA embassy may become a scene in Iraq by the time the last of our troops pull out.

What began as an honest effort to right a wrong and bring criminals to justice, turned into a political and power nightmare. Our leadership lost focus of what the true mission was and got side tracked by their personal agendas.

We the people are responsible for oversight of our leaders. We can not sit passively on the side lines and say nothing. We must be vocal and we must use the power of the ballot box.

This is our country first, not the Capital Hill gang.

Speak often, speak loudly, and make your vote count every time.

President Obama's Health Care Reform Speech

Last night I watched the President's address to the joint session of Congress. I was hoping for more substance and was disappointed. In truth, I wish he would present his own bill to Congress and let the debate start with one solid piece of proposed legislation, rather than waste so much time with the bits and pieces coming out of the various committees.

That being said, a few of his statements have me concerned. I do not believe this administration, or any administration for that matter, will ever be able to effectively and efficiently police and wipe out the fraud against Medicare and Medicaid. It has not been done in forty years, why should it start now?

Still harboring many doubts I sent the following letter my senators and a similar one to the President. Please feel free to use all or any part in writing to your representatives and the President. Health Reform is needed, but the Washington gang has to do it right so we don't pay for it forever.

Its Common Sense!

Dear Senator,
Please see the quote below.

House Democrats offered a bill that the Congressional Budget Office said would add $220 billion to the deficit over 10 years. But Democrats and Obama administration officials claimed the bill actually was deficit-neutral. They said they simply didn't have to count $245 billion of it — the cost of adjusting Medicare reimbursement rates so physicians don't face big annual pay cuts.
Their reasoning was that they already had decided to exempt this "doc fix" from congressional rules that require new programs to be paid for. In other words, it doesn't have to be paid for because they decided it doesn't have to be paid for.
The administration also said that since Obama already had included the doctor payment in his 10-year budget proposal, it didn't have to be counted again.

Is this true? How can you not count the $245 billion? When will you in Washington deal with real money like the rest of us?

Once again I want to state that I think the first thing Congress should do is prove that they can actually control Medicare and Medicaid abuse and show the American public the actual, real savings. Once Congress proves they can not only save, but also prosecute the abusers of Medicare and Medicaid, then will be the time to push forward the rest of the Health Care Reform agenda.

The American public has heard enough rhetoric. We are tired of building an unmanageable debt for our grandchildren and becoming a stooge for the Chinese.

Show us you can control what you have before asking for more. We do not need more bureaucracy. We need the bureaucracies already in place to function efficiently, effectively, and within their budgets.

No more new agencies until the old ones start performing according to their Statutes.

Put up or shut up. No more money until you prove you can not only control the budget but make it break even.

Thank you.

President Obama's Address to Children

I am totally puzzled with all of the uproar regarding tomorrow's speech from the President to school children. Just what kind of liberal propaganda message do they think the president is going to give?

Reagan and Bush 1 gave national speeches to school children and can anyone who was in school at that time tell me what they heard and how it inspired or had a negative effect on their lives?

Why all this reaction before the fact?

If people want to criticize the President then let's do it on things he has done or on concrete proposals he has made. This jumping and talking about keeping children home from school is just ridiculous.

If we are to ban our children from listening to addresses from the President, and not trust their parents to discuss the speeches with them, are we also going to ban talk show commentators from the airwaves because of the influence their speeches (rantings and ravings) can have on our children?

Glen Beck called the president a racist, what effect did that have on children? I have not seen any movement to insure that children can no longer listen to Mr. Beck. What about Rush Limbaugh? Some of his comments can be taken as almost treason.

And I am not just picking on the conservatives. The liberals have their big mouths as well with all of their conspiracy theories and fear that the rich want to destroy the poor.

The bottom line is the Constitution and the Bill of Rights which grant ALL Americans the Freedom of Speech. We may not agree with what you have to say, but by God we are suppose to defend your right to say it. The founders of this country, through many years of fighting, discussion and debate knew that not everyone would agree but they did believe that every one's voice should be heard and then it was up to the listener to decide if what was said had value or not.

Today, the biggest proponents of the Freedom of Speech are also the ones who want to limit that freedom to those who do not agree with them.

Why are people afraid of the President speaking to the children? If so many are afraid of what the President is going to say, why did so many vote for him?

True, things are not going down the yellow brick road in DC, but they never do. Politics always rears its ugly head and forces compromise on all idealistic plans.

Let the President speak. Afterwards, you will be free to praise or criticize. Your children will be free to discuss the speech with you and all of you will be able to discuss the pros and cons.

Freedom of Speech, its the one freedom we must always preserve in this country.

Its Common Sense!
