Since Christmas we have heard the story of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian who was able to outsmart air security in Nigeria and the Netherlands, board a Detroit bound flight with explosives and almost succeeded in bringing down the plane.
Now there are investigations, talk of full body scanners, police with machine-guns and dogs roaming the airports. Apparently once again the international security forces were out smarted.
Which got me to thinking. Many years ago I read a book titled "Seven Days of the Condor", (the film version with Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway was "Three Days of the Condor"). Its about intrigue and a falling out within the CIA. I won't go into detail, read the book or see the movie. The interesting thing is that protagonist works for the CIA as a reader. He and a small staff read books to see if any CIA operations have been compromised, as well as to gain information that could be useful for future operations.
I think Homeland Security needs to create this kind of department. They can read literature looking for anyway a threat could be brought against the USA, as well as use their imaginations to create scenarios of possible threats.
Thus far all of our actions have been after the fact. I think its time we go on the offensive and anticipate the next and beat the terrorists at their game.

Driver License for Illegal Immigrants
The legislature of the State of Maryland (my state) voted to continue issuing valid driver licenses to illegal aliens until June 1, 2009. They will also renew licenses for those illegals who already obtained a license.
I sent the following letters to my senators in DC and my representatives in Annaplois. As you will see, I find the whole business rather frightening. I think we are giving too much away trying to be "nice".
Please read and make your own decision.

Dear Senator
Below is the message I sent to my representatives in Annapolis when I learned the state of Maryland is going to continue the practice of giving valid driver licenses to illegal aliens until June 1. What is Homeland Security's view of providing valid documents to illegals? Is the state of Maryland in violation of Federal law by providing legal documents to illegals who are not only migrant workers, but also criminals and terrorists?I find the situation very distrubing from a security point of view, especially with the problems currently on the USA/Mexico border. I appreciate your response.The message I sent to Annapolis follows.

I just read that the State of Maryland passed the following legislation.
The bill bans anyone who cannot prove they are in the United States legally from obtaining a driver's license starting June 1. Had the bill passed by a three-fifth majority that ban on new licenses would have taken effect this Sunday.The bill will allow the estimated 350,000 illegal immigrants who currently have driver's licenses to renew them, until July 1, 2015, when they would expire, unless the immigrant obtained legal status.The renewed license would be labeled "not federal complaint" and could not be used as ID to board a plane.
How are illegal aliens currently able to obtain a valid Maryland driver's license? What documentation do they have to present? How does the state differentiate between illegal worker and illegal terrorist?So until June 1 any illegal alien in the country can come to Maryland and get a valid driver's license which will be a legal document and allow them access to air travel as citizens. Is that correct?Just what insurance companies are insuring these illegal aliens? After all, they do not have valid visas, Social Security Numbers, Tax IDs or anything else to show they have an income. So how are they getting insurance?The real kicker, besides from the insult of actually giving licenses, is that the state plans to renew them. Sure, they have "not federal complaint" but who cares? I find it shocking that our legislature is so worried about money that they have opted to put national security on the back burner and allow anyone who can provide the fee a driver's license with no questions asked.No wonder guns are headed to Mexico, illegal aliens can use a valid Maryland license to go to gun shows in Virginia and buy as many weapons as they want with no background check. (I saw 60 Minutes this week - National Security is a wonderful thing that all state governments seem to be supporting.)Needless to say, I like many others are sadly disappointed with the legislature's decision to give rights to illegal aliens that legal citizens in Maryland are not entitled to. I wonder whose interests the representatives in Annapolis are representing, we the taxpayers who have to fund the state and keep things going, or the lobby for illegals, who evidently have campaign funds available, even though their "constituents" do not pay taxes, Social Security or Medicare and who are draining the resources of state because no one is holding them accountable or enforcing the law.I for one will be reviewing voting records before the next election and giving serious thought to who I want as my representative in Annapolis. Obama's Train Ride
On January 17 President-elect Obama and his family will address an event in Philadelphia. They will then board a train, proceed to Wilmington, Delaware and pick up the Biden entourage, then proceed to Baltimore for another event and finally reach Washington DC.
According to the press release, Obama is taking the trip for all those who cannot attend the Inauguration. Trust me, anyone between Philly and DC who want to be there will figure out a way to be present.
Obama wants to remember Lincoln's journey to DC. He would do well to remember that a mob almost took out Lincoln in Baltimore.
Regardless if it is a positive symbolic gesture or not, the truth of the matter is that it is one more expense the American tax payer does not need to carry. How much will security cost for this train ride? What inconveniences will those along the route have to suffer?
Why not leave well enough alone? Obama is in DC, he should stay and get ready for the battles to come. There is no need to tempt some loony by riding on a train that passes chemical plants.
What is he thinking? His security people surely pointed out the risks. His economic people should have pointed out the cost.
Barack Obama campaigned to bring change. As we get closer to his Inauguration it looks more and more like the same old thing. An ego trip ignoring all of those around him.
American needs a leader. Due to our current situation, Obama is going to need to start off running and deliver big and for the long time if he is going to be successful.
He does not know it all, he needs his advisers and he needs to listen to the people. The last thing we need is some who sees himself as a demi-god.
Americans are tolerant, but only up to a point.
This time promises were made that the people actually expect the President to keep. If he fails, his days will be numbered.

Fallout!!
It didn't take long for the fallout to begin.
Evidently Sarah Palin did not do too well in geography, unless everyone else in Alaska thought Africa was a country and not a continent. After all, you can see Russia and Canada from Alaska, but Africa is out of sight.
Joe Lieberman is probably going to pay the price for supporting his friend John McCain. Word is that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called Joe in for a little chat, probably to let him know that he will no longer be the chairman for the Homeland Security committee. If Al Franken becomes the new DEMOCRAT Senator from Minnesota maybe that will be his reward.
The leaders of the American Big Three - GM, Ford and Chrysler - met with Nancy Pelosi today to see about a 25 billion excellent term loan. Yesterday Pelosi was talking about another stimulus package.
Do you think Pelosi has a Chinese lover and that's why she wants to get the country more in debt to China? How much money does this woman want to borrow? How big a debt does she want to leave for her grandchildren?
I watched a teary eyed George W talk to his staff in what I guess was his initial farewell.
We wish you luck in Crawford, George.
Barney, George W's best friend, took a bite out of a reporter, something I bet George W would have loved to do.
Today Obama got his first national security briefing and is probably asking himself, Why the hell did I want to be president?
The stock market drop another 400+. I believe in the past two days its gone down by ten percent. Evidently not everyone has jumped onto the time for change bandwagon.
The fancy stores - Sachs 5th Avenue, Neiman Marcus - sales are down, which means that the rich are so worried about Obama's tax proposals that they are already starting to hide money under the mattress.
Hopefully calm will prevail and things will get back on balance. Its going to be a bumpy winter.
Pay careful attention to the next plan Congress comes out with to "help" the economy. Could be we'll be selling our butts before we know it.
We should have gotten rid of the incumbents!!
